How are allergies treated? The treatment of the allergy is based on three measures: a. Treatment of the symptoms or symptomatic treatment. This consists of treating a series of symptoms that are characteristic of the allergy, such as: itching, nasal obstruction, tearing, sneezing, conjunctivitis and difficulty in breathing. This treatment uses different medicines: antihistamines, vasoconstrictor or corticoid nasal decongestants, ophthalmic eye drops and bronchodilators. However, bear in mind that the consumption of these medicines will make the symptoms disappear only temporarily, since it is exclusively a symptomatic treatment. When you stop the medication, especially during certain times of the year, the symptoms will reappear. b. Avoid the allergen. If you are allergic to a certain type of allergen, you should avoid contact with it as much possible. If you are allergic to the epithelia of a certain type of pet, you should avoid direct contact with them. If you are allergic to plant or grass pollen, you should avoid going to the countryside during pollen season, and on car trips you should keep the windows closed as a preventive measure. c. Treatment with immunotherapy vaccines. IMMUNOTHERAPY is a treatment that consists of administering increasing doses of the allergen or mixture of allergens that cause the allergy. It is the only treatment that acts on the origin of the problem, decreasing the disease's symptoms and producing tolerance and immunity when exposed to the allergen.
Immunotherapy with allergens is a treatment endorsed by the World Health Organisation.
